Online Workshop: Grant Writing & Management

Max Planck Society (MPG) and University of Cologne (UoC), in association with German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH), New Delhi, are organizing a workshop on “Grant Writing & Management”. The concept of the workshop is to illustrate the methods and technical know-how required to prepare successful international research proposals irrespective of a certain disciplinary field. The workshop will cover topics from content development of a research proposal, scientific writing skills to budget planning.

The workshop will be organized in two phases:
1. Phase I will cover the basics of writing a grant and fellowship application. Phase I of the workshop will be organized on 2nd – 3rd December 2021.
2. The Phase II will provide individual guidance and review to the few selected participants. These participants will be shortlisted on the basis of their draft application that should be adapted to the research fields and methods as explained earlier in Phase I. Please note that only the participants of Phase I of the workshop will be eligible to apply for the Phase II. The dates for Phase II of the workshop will be communicated at the end of the Phase I of the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for early-career researchers, who are looking for a post-doctoral fellowships or independent research grants for young researchers.

Experts

Mr. Salvatore Angilletta (EU grants affairs for the Cologne based Max-Planck Institutes (Plant Breeding, Biology of Ageing, Metabolism Research and Study of Societies)

Salvatore Angilletta is responsible for EU grants affairs for the Cologne based Max-Planck Institutes (Plant Breeding, Biology of Ageing, Metabolism Research and Study of Societies). In his work, he pays special attention to young scientists in attracting external fellowships and grants to enhance research capacities and foster individual careers. Special focus is given on the career perspective acknowledging the increasing globalization, competition and speed of science.
He was, on behalf of the European Commission, Chair of the secretariat of the global ENIC-NARIC network responsible for the recognition of academic and professional qualifications. He was appointed expert by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) for the working group of the European Commission developing a CREST/European Council’s report on “Mutual learning on approaches to improve the excellence of research in universities” chaired and published by Frank Ziegele and Georg Krücken. He was member of a national expert commission for the development of the 1st national action plan for the enhancement of career perspectives of young researchers of the BMBF. He was member of the supervisory board of German EIT Health GmbH 2015-2017. Salvatore published in international peer reviewed journals and books, being the first in Germany to assess effects of globalization on educational systems in a sold-out monograph in 2000. Salvatore holds a degree in educational sciences from the Technical University of Dortmund and has numerous publications on education and the future of its institutions.

Dr. Thilo Zimmermann (University of Cologne)
Thilo Zimmermann is an International Project Manager for third-party funded projects at the International Office of the University of Cologne. He serves as advisor for DAAD Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) ProGRANT project, organizing proposal writing courses for young research scholars around the world. He studied economics at the University of Cologne and holds a PhD in International Political Economy from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy. He went to Harvard University and École Normale Supérieure in Paris for one year research stays. His PhD on European Republicanism, a new approach to understand European integration, was published by Palgrave in 2019. Before his PhD, he worked at the German Embassy in Rome, Italy, where he coordinated several projects. After his PhD, he was a consultant for Tavla, a start-up company in the digital sector that was back then hosted by the Gateway incubator at the University of Cologne.

Participant Profile

You are eligible to apply, if you meet the following criteria:
• Final year PhD scholars, post-doctoral researchers and above in India and Brazil, and
• Affiliated to an academic institution in India and Brazil, and/or
• If you are at the early stage of your research career (preferable)

Participants will be selected on the basis of the quality of their resume and exposé. Please note that your application does not guarantee confirmation of your participation.
