Digital Twins of the Ocean - Opportunities for Future Proof Sustainable Development

Marine scientists are increasingly seeing Digital Twins as a tool to identify socio-environmental problems, especially those related to human interactions with the ocean. By bundling and providing access to observational data, models, and simulations, digital twins allow users to explore current and future ‘what-if’ scenarios.

In the context of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, in this lecture you will explore the high-value application of Digital Twins in fisheries, mariculture, marine protected areas, ocean-based tourism, ecological forecasting, nature-based solutions, marine infrastructure development, and the interactions between all of these.

Further get insights into the project “DITTO – The Digital Twins of the Ocean“ as a model to advance a digital framework to empower ocean professionals and forecast experts, citizen scientists, policymakers, and the general public to explore their ocean knowledge and create their create own application-focused digital twin.

Prof. Martin Visbeck

Head, Physical Oceanography Research Unit,  GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

He is also a professor at Kiel University, Germany. His research interests revolve around ocean’s role in the climate system, ocean circulation, upwelling systems, integrated global ocean observation, digital-twins of the ocean and the ocean dimension of sustainable development. He is deeply involved in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and promoting sustained ocean observations and Digital Twins of the ocean.
