Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH
India, known to be the largest country in South Asia, is also equally rich in culture and diversity. It is considered an emerging economic and industrial power; however, there are certain factors such as its burgeoning population and accelerated urbanisation, which have resulted in exposure to increased risks.
GIZ has been working jointly with partners in India for sustainable development since 1971. Several milestones have been achieved since then, including the launch of the national health scheme, the establishment of the Indo-German Environment Forum, the implementation of various initiatives to improve livelihoods for the rural population, especially women, and finally the launch of several initiatives in the energy sector. 2018 was very special for the GIZ in India as it marked 60 years of Indo-German Development Cooperation. We are very proud to mention that India continues to be Germany’s biggest development partner with a proven track record of successful project implementation.
GIZ India is currently supporting the Indian Government in some of their flagship initiatives which include Smart Cities, Clean India Mission and Skill India. Both countries are committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are keen to foster a spirit of progressive partnership and trust. Within the Indo-German Development Cooperation framework, Germany supports India to achieve progress in the areas of Energy, Environment, Climate Change and Biodiversity, Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development and Sustainable Economic Development.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as well as the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) are the main commissioning parties of GIZ in India. Other clients include the European Union, foundations and a number of Indian public sector organizations.
