Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is “The Research University in the Helmholtz Association”. As one of the largest scientific institutions in Europe, the only German university of excellence combines a long university tradition with programme-oriented cutting-edge research. The university world, whose roots go back to 1825, stands for the breadth of disciplines and knowledge, while the Helmholtz world is traditionally oriented towards the major and pressing issues of society, science and the economy. The aim of the KIT is to contribute to the success of major projects in society through excellent teaching, cutting-edge research and innovation, which are also among its central tasks. These include the future energy supply, sustainable mobility and intelligent and secure technology for the information age.
At KIT, more than 5,500 scientists work together on a broad disciplinary basis in the natural, engineering, economic, humanities and social sciences. Regardless of whether they are involved in large-scale research or university tasks, they participate in teaching, so that students gain insights that only KIT, as the research university in the Helmholtz Association, can offer them. Ultimately, the developments of KIT researchers should benefit society in the form of products, processes or procedures. In this way, KIT not only creates and imparts knowledge for society and the environment, but also develops applications for the economy from it. Constant contact and exchange with society, for example through real-world laboratories, is an important goal of KIT.
KIT offers more than 107 modern degree programmes at bachelor’s and master’s level in engineering and economics, natural sciences and computer science, humanities and social sciences. The more than 22,000 students benefit from practice-oriented teaching, have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary projects and can attend a wide range of courses.
The KIT has many years of experience in working with India, with numerous collaborations between scientists in research and teaching on an individual basis. Scientists at the KIT work in various fields with different partners at Indian educational and research institutions. Research and teaching activities also result from research stays by Indian doctoral students at the KIT institutes. These contacts regularly lead to third-party funded cooperation projects on a wide range of topics.
In the field of innovation, KIT works with various Indian partners through its KIT-Gründerschmiede platform and the GHPro programme, and supports the formats of the German-Indian Centre in New Delhi.
